What does a webcam test check?
A webcam test turns your camera on in the browser and shows the live picture, so you can see that it works before a call, an exam or an interview. It works as a camera test for any built-in laptop camera, USB webcam or phone camera. This one also reads the resolution and frame rate the camera actually delivers, which is often lower than the number on the box, and it lets you switch between cameras.
How to test your webcam
- Click Start webcam test and allow camera access when your browser asks.
- Check the live picture: it should be sharp, well lit and smooth.
- Compare the resolution and frame rate with what your camera promises.
- If you have more than one camera, pick another one from the list.
- Take a test photo or clip to check how you'll look to others, then click Stop.
My webcam isn't working: what can I check?
- Permission blocked: click the camera or lock icon in the address bar and allow the camera for this site, then reload.
- Camera in use: close other apps that may hold the camera, such as video call apps, and try again. On Windows only one app can use most cameras at a time.
- Privacy switch or shutter: many laptops have a sliding cover, a key with a camera symbol or a switch on the side.
- System settings: on Windows, open Settings → Privacy & security → Camera and allow camera access for apps and your browser. On macOS, open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera.
- USB webcams: try another USB port, ideally directly on the computer instead of a hub.
What resolution and frame rate should a webcam have?
| Resolution | Name | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| 640 × 480 | VGA | Basic calls; looks soft on large screens |
| 1280 × 720 | HD, 720p | Most video calls; what call apps usually send |
| 1920 × 1080 | Full HD, 1080p | Sharp calls, recording and streaming |
| 3840 × 2160 | 4K | Recording and cropping; rarely needed for calls |
30 frames per second looks smooth for talking. A measured rate well below 30 usually means the room is too dark: many webcams slow down to collect more light. Turn on a lamp, or use the white screen as a soft light, and test again.
Is it safe to test my webcam online?
On this page, yes. The camera picture is handled by your own browser and shown only on your screen. Nothing is sent to us or anyone else, and the camera turns off when you click Stop or leave the page. Test photos and clips are created on your device and are only saved if you choose to keep them.
Webcam Test: questions and answers
Why does my webcam show a lower resolution than advertised?
Many cameras only reach their top resolution at a lower frame rate, or only with their own app. Browsers also pick a mode the camera offers. The values here are what your camera really sends to the browser.
Why is the picture mirrored?
It is mirrored like a mirror by default, because that feels natural. Other people in a call usually see you the right way round. Untick Mirror the picture to see that view.
Is my video recorded or uploaded?
No. The video is shown only on this page and never leaves your device. A test photo or clip is created in your browser and saved only if you keep it.
Why is my webcam frame rate low?
Usually because the room is dark: the camera slows down to let in more light. More light, closing other apps that use the camera and a direct USB port normally bring it back to 30 fps.
Can I test my phone's camera?
Yes. Open this page on your phone, start the test and choose the front or back camera from the list.
How do I test my camera on Windows or Mac?
Open this page, click Start webcam test and allow the camera. It works the same in Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari on Windows and macOS, with no app to install. If nothing shows, check the camera privacy setting in your system settings.
