How do I convert JSON to Excel?
JSON to Excel is a free converter that turns JSON into a real .xlsx spreadsheet or a CSV file in your browser. Paste JSON or drop a file, press Convert and download the file: every object becomes a row and every field a column. Nothing is uploaded.
How does JSON become a spreadsheet?
| In the JSON | In Excel |
|---|---|
| A list of objects | One row per object, one column per field |
| Nested object | Columns named by path, e.g. address.city (or JSON text) |
| List of values | Joined in one cell: red, green, blue |
| List of objects in a row | Its own sheet, with a # column pointing to the parent row |
| Object with several lists | A sheet per list, plus an "Info" sheet for the other fields |
| Numbers and true/false | Real numbers and TRUE/FALSE, ready for formulas |
| Dates like 2026-10-26T09:30:00Z | Excel dates you can sort and filter |
Every sheet gets a bold, frozen header row, filters on every column and widths that fit the data. Text that looks like a number, such as a phone number 00385…, stays text, so no leading zeros are lost, and text that starts with = is never turned into a formula.
How do I convert JSON to XLSX step by step?
- Paste your JSON into the box, or drop a .json, .jsonl or .ndjson file onto it.
- Choose how nested objects and lists should appear. The defaults suit most API responses and exports.
- Press Convert and check the preview of the first rows.
- Press Download and open the .xlsx or .csv file in Excel, Google Sheets, Apple Numbers or LibreOffice.
Why use this JSON to Excel converter?
- Private by design. API responses, customer lists and logs often contain personal data. Here the file is built in your browser, so nothing is sent to a server.
- Handles real-world JSON. Deep nesting, lists inside lists and JSON Lines exports become clean, linked sheets instead of one column of text.
- A proper Excel file. Real numbers, dates and TRUE/FALSE values, not a CSV that Excel has to guess about.
- No limits or sign-up. No account, no watermark and no row cap below Excel's own limit.
How do I convert JSON to CSV?
Paste or drop your JSON, choose CSV (.csv) under Save as and press Convert. You get a UTF-8 CSV file with a header row, so accented letters and emoji open correctly in Excel. If the JSON contains lists of objects that become their own sheets, you get a ZIP with one CSV file per sheet. Text that starts with = + - or @ gets a leading apostrophe, so no spreadsheet runs it as a formula.
How do I open a JSON file in Excel?
The quickest way is to convert it here and open the .xlsx file with a double-click. In Excel itself you can also use Data → Get Data → From File → From JSON, which opens the Power Query editor where you expand records and lists by hand. This converter does that expanding for you: nested fields become columns and lists become linked sheets.
Questions
Is my JSON uploaded?
No. The conversion runs in your browser and the Excel file is created on your device. Your data is never sent to Okviro Tools or anyone else.
How are nested objects converted?
By default each nested field becomes its own column, named by its path, for example address.city. You can also keep nested objects as JSON text in one column.
What happens to arrays inside the JSON?
Simple lists such as tags are joined with commas in one cell. Lists of objects, such as the orders of a customer, get their own sheet, and a # column links each row to its parent row.
Does it keep leading zeros and long numbers?
Text such as "00385" or a phone number stays text, so leading zeros are kept. Numbers stay numbers. JSON numbers longer than 15 digits lose precision in Excel itself, so store long IDs as text in the JSON.
How big can the JSON file be?
Up to 100 MB, and up to Excel's limit of 1,048,576 rows and 16,384 columns per sheet. Larger data is cut at the limit and the tool tells you.
Does it work with JSON Lines?
Yes. A file with one JSON object per line (.jsonl or .ndjson), as many logs and exports use, is read as a list of rows.
My JSON has an error. What now?
The tool shows the line and column where the JSON stops being valid, explains the problem in plain words and quotes the text around it. Common causes are a missing comma, a trailing comma before ] or }, or single quotes instead of double quotes.
Can I convert JSON to CSV instead of Excel?
Yes. Choose CSV under Save as. One table becomes one UTF-8 CSV file; several sheets come as a ZIP with one CSV per sheet.
How do I open a JSON file in Excel?
Convert it here and open the .xlsx file, or in Excel use Data → Get Data → From File → From JSON and expand the columns in Power Query.
